Tackling the Threat from Liver Fluke – Top 10 Actions.

25th June 2013

Weather conditions that favour liver fluke have continued and this lookslikely to result in  high numbers of theparasites on many livestock farms again this year. Last season this caught out anumber of producers causing high losses and many more sheep (and cattle) inpoor condition as a result of liver damage. While some of these cases have involved resistance to one of the mainproducts used (Triclabendazole – TCBZ) many more have been due to under dosing ormisunderstanding of the risk of re-infection following treatment. The bottomline is that with the challenge from liver fluke so high, sticking to traditionaltreatment programmes will fail to prevent them causing havoc. If we are going tominimise the impact of liver fluke this coming season it must involve some carefulforward planning.
